History of Pioneer Court
Pioneer Court is believed to be the site of Jean Baptiste Point du Sable’s original residence and trading post, making it the location of the first pioneer settlement in what would later become Chicago. In 1965 the plaza was built on the former site of his homestead as part of the Equitable Life Assurance Society of America Building. For decades, the Equitable Building was the headquarters for International Harvester, the descendent of Cyrus McCormick’s original reaper works. Equitable remained the building and plaza’s owner until it was acquired in 2001 by Zeller and later, Walton Street, who retained Zeller as management.
Zeller spearheaded the reimaging of Pioneer Court, including the development of the one-of-a-kind Apple World Flagship Store. In addition, Zeller has activated Pioneer Court as a community space, welcoming a variety of events, festivals, brand activations, iconic art installations, and event some notable TV and Movie filming.
