Market Tower’s Peregrines

Did you know that Market Tower has been home to the world’s fastest animal for over 30 years? Many peregrine falcons have taken a liking to Market Tower and have called downtown Indianapolis their home since 1995.  Historically, peregrine falcons used to nest on cliffsides near waterways, which is a difficult habitat to find in Indiana.  However, peregrine falcons have adapted to urban areas with skyscrapers, which they use to hunt and nest.  To help the falcons nest, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) installed a nest box, which provides protection from extreme weather and a secure nesting space.  The nest box – which faces historic Monument Circle – has helped various peregrine parents successfully raise more than 90 chicks! As of 2024, the occupants of Market Tower’s nest box are a male named Jeffrey and a female named Willow.

Falcon Cam

The peregrine falcon nest box camera is sponsored by Market Tower and the Amos Bulter Audubon Society.  The Indiana DNR maintains the nest box. Depending on time and resources, the Indiana DNR may band peregrine falcon chicks to keep track of peregrine falcon movements and better understand survival.
